ePublishing

ePUB is an e-book file format with the extension (.epub) which can be downloaded and read on devices like smartphones, tablets, computers, or e-readers. It is a free and open standard published by the International Digital Publishing Forum. The term is short for electronic publication and is sometimes styled ePub. ePUB became an official standard of the IDPF in September 2007, superseding the older Open eBook standard. The Book Industry Study Group endorses ePUB 3 as the format of choice for packaging content and has stated that the global book publishing industry should rally around a single standard. ePUB is the most widely supported vendor-independent XML-based (as opposed to PDF) e-book format; that is, it is supported by the largest number of hardware readers, including Amazon Kindle Fire.

What is ePub2.0?

ePUB is an e-book file format with the extension (.epub) which can be downloaded and read on devices like smartphones, tablets, computers, or e-readers. It is a free and open standard published by the International Digital Publishing Forum. It is also widely used on many software readers such as iBooks on Apple devices, and Google Books on Android. iBooks also supports the proprietary iBook format, which is based on the ePUB format but depends upon code from the iBooks app to function.

ePUB 2.0 was approved in October 2007, with a maintenance update (2.0.1) approved in September 2010. The ePUB3 specification was published in November 2014. New major features include support for precise layout or specialized formatting, such as for comic books, and MathML support.

Features of ePub 2.0:

The format and many readers support the following:

  • Reflowable document: a reader can optimize text for a particular display device. ePub also supports fixed-layout content. Fixed-layout pre-paginated content can be useful for certain kinds of highly-designed content such as illustrated books that are designed to be consumed only on a larger-screen device, such as a tablet.
  • Like an HTML web site, the format supports inline raster and vector images, metadata, and CSS styling.
  • Bookmarking of a page.
  • Highlight passages and make notes.
  • Many readers include a library where books can be sorted and searched.
  • Font size can be enlarged or made smaller. Text and background colour can be changed.
  • MathML: theoretical support of a subset of MathML.

Digital rights management: an ePub can contain Digital Rights Management (DRM) as an optional layer. The ePub specification does not enforce or suggest a particular DRM scheme. This could affect the level of support for various DRM systems on devices and the portability of purchased e-books. Consequently, such DRM incompatibility may segment the ePub format along the lines of DRM systems, undermining the advantages of a single standard format and confusing the consumer.

e-Book publishing is the next revolution in digital publishing. This revolution involves a new market and a multifaceted revenue model by publishing their contents in multiple formats for I-PAD, KINDLE & KINDLE FIRE, NOOK, KOBO, SONY, GOOGLE PLAY, ETC.

We focus on improving the way eBooks are designed and amended to various formats. The spotlight in the recent years has been on the quality and the turnaround time of eBook conversions as the number of service providers have grown globally.

We geared up to accept challenges and scale new frontiers. We embrace the changes that rise in the industry as they arrive. The major formats available for an eBook are:

  • Amazon Kindle: Kindle (AZW, TPZ), TXT, MOBI, PRC and PDF.
  • Apple iPad: ePub, PDF (plus iPad Apps, which could include Kindle and Barnes & Noble readers)
  • Barnes & Noble Nook: ePub, PDB, PDF.
  • Sony Reader: ePub, PDF, BBEB .

We are aware of the ever increasing demand in this eBook industry and we have resilient and adequate expertise in house to successfully import the contents of your print version in any of the above formats.

A fixed layout book, sometimes called an “illustrated book”, has a pixel specific page size that you can use to precisely control the layout of the objects on the pages. You can embed fonts, choose particular text sizes, and precisely position images. You can even create a two-page spread in which a single image spans both pages. The iBooks app will scale the image to best fit the device.

These books can be zoomed but it is like zooming a picture. The text does not reflow and you will have to pan around to see the page. The books are primarily images with text overlays and in this fashion they resemble DJVU format (actually IW44) or some PDFs however they are unique in that they begin as ePub style documents.

An ePub check program will typically issue some warnings about this extension to the spec, especially that items in the ePub file are not listed in the OPF. Standard ePub reading programs and devices may be able to read one of these files with good or poor results depending on the file itself.

Fixed layouts are particularly recommended for titles where one of the following layout elements is critical for the reader's experience:

  • Multi-column text.
  • Illustrations or graphics which are essential to understanding the text.
  • Coffee table books, photo albums.
  • Ratios of the size of text/image which must not change.
  • Colours which must be true to the paper version.

Types of book that are frequently converted into Fixed Layout books include:

  • Children's picture books.
  • Cookery books.
  • Travel guides.
  • Restaurant guides.
  • Company reports and annual reviews.
  • Academic publications.
  • Text books and learning materials.
  • Business guides.
